The instrument rating will expand the flying privileges of your Private Pilot license to include flying in IFR weather conditions that is below the minimums required for flight under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). Many pilots say that the training they receive during their instrument rating training course makes them an all around better pilot as well, and many insurance companies are now giving discounts of up to 25% for pilots with an Instrument Rating .

Requirements:

  • Have a Private Pilot License
  • 50 Hours of PIC Cross-Country Time
  • 40 Hours of Actual or Simulated Instrument Time
  • 15 Hours of Dual Instrument Flight Training
  • IFR Cross-Country consisting of:
    • 250 Nautical Miles Total Distance Along Airways or ATC Routing
    • Instrument Approach at each airport
    • 3 different approaches
  • 3 Hours of Instrument Flight Training for Practical within 60 Days of the Practical
